Serviceman Building a national service organization was a critical challenge to a growing company like Burroughs. Distributed sales teams generated the need for office locations, and increased sales generated the need for men who could provide service to the growing customer base. Branch offices were positioned in high growth potential areas as the company grew.
Being able to offer (and advertise) a substancial service organization became a competitive advantage as more business machine vendors populated the early 20th century. It became a strategy to advertise service capability in print advertisements during those early years.
Training the new sales and service force was also a challenge. Service personnel that were hired were dispatched to the Detroit main plant and spent months on the product assemble lines learning to build, and as a result service, the latest machine models. These servicemen (there were no woman servicing Burroughs machine in the early years) were rotated to every work station in the manufacturing line so they would learn each part of the machines. As a result, when these servicemen arrived back in their home towns to begin their jobs, they know the part number of every part in the machine. Servicemen were originally names 'Mechanical Inspectors'. Later, the name 'Field Engineers' was used.
Eventually, the service organization had significant depth to have branch offices in all large cities in the USA. They also established 'resident points' where Field Engineers (as the became to be called) would work out of their homes in more remote areas.
The following is a list of service locations, called Branch Offices, in the USA in 1907. Locations marked with * were 'sub-agencies' selling and servicing Burroughs products.
