Arnab Goswami may not have a Twitter account, but his arrest yesterday turned the social media site into a day-long episode of the Arnab Goswami show, complete with extreme reactions, unbridled schadenfreude and, of course, forecasts of an imminent armageddon.
Leaders from the ruling dispensation predictably came out in support of Goswami, calling his arrest everything from a facist move to a sign of an undeclared Emergency. “We condemn this attack on press freedom in Maharashtra. This reminds us of the Emergency days,” said Prakash Javadekar. “Those in the free press who don’t stand up for Arnab, you are now tactically in support of facism,” chirped Smriti Irani. “It is a big blow to the principles of democracy and journalism,” bellowed JP Nadda. “This facist move is a sign of undeclared emergency,” muttered Piyush Goyal. “Arresting a journalist of the stature of Arnab Goswami by abuse of Police power, because he was asking questions, is something we all need to condemn,” said Ravi Shankar Prasad

Opposition-leaning accounts, meanwhile, said that the journalist “deserved no sympathy”. Srivatsa YB, national campaign in-charge for the Youth Congress, wrote, “Real journalist Prashant Kanojia was arrested for a tweet by Adityanath. Fake Journalist Arnab Goswami has been arrested for abetting a suicide. Paid media kept quiet on Kanojia but shouting 'Press Freedom' on Arnab's arrest. Others tried to find the humour in this sordid episode. Industrialist Harsh Goenka wrote, “Rhea Chakraborty was arrested without real proof for abetting suicide of Sushant thanks partly to relentless campaign by Arnab. It was WRONG! Today Arnab is arrested on charges of abetting suicide. It is WRONG! ‘A boomerang returns back to the person that throws’ - that’s KARMA.”

Comedian Kunal Kamra, who was banned by various airlines after he accosted Goswami on an Indigo flight earlier this year, kept it brief and to the point. “Flight ban on Arnab for today,” he wrote.
But the tweet of the day was from Tehseen Poonawalla, who resurrected one of Goswami’s most famous recent outbursts: “The suddenness of the move... The unpredictability of the move… The fact that there was no warning...”
